Square Marketing alternatives

Keep Square. Stop rebuilding the list for the next offer.

Square Marketing sends a welcome, a birthday or a win-back. GetSetReply adds what comes after: every customer gets their own Square code, and their next offer goes out when they use the last one. Your register, payments and email stay in Square.

Next: a short form, then about 30 minutes with our team on what you send your Square customers today. GetSetReply is a separate company, not part of Square, and your register stays Square.

What GetSetReply adds on top of Square

A four-step series a burrito shop ran by hand in Square

A burrito shop owner built a four-step series of offers in Square. Each one was meant for customers who had used the one before:

  1. $5 off when they signed up.
  2. A free house-made lemonade once they used the $5.
  3. A bring-a-friend burrito deal.
  4. 20% off an order over $50.

The weekly work behind it

  1. Open Square's campaign report and see who redeemed each offer.
  2. Build a customer group for the next step from that list.
  3. Take out anyone already in a later group.
  4. Send each group its next offer.
  5. Do it again next week.

Why it has to be done by hand: Square's help pages describe each automated campaign as one message to the customers who meet its criteria. The filters its customer groups article lists (purchases, loyalty, sales channel, custom fields) do not include who redeemed an offer. So owners who want the next step to follow a redemption rebuild the group themselves.

Why it gets harder as the list grows

  • Size. Whether your list is 150 people or 2,000, it is the same five steps every week. Only the number of names you check grows.
  • Timing. Someone who redeems on Monday waits for the next rebuild before their next offer goes out.
  • Mistakes. Leave someone in last week's group and they get the same offer twice. Miss them and a customer who just came back hears nothing.

The same series in GetSetReply

The owner's series is now set up in GetSetReply with two steps changed:

  • The lemonade became 50% off any one item.
  • The 20% off over $50 became 25% off the whole order.

Each step waits for the one before it to be used at the register. Square tells us the code was used, usually within minutes. The next offer goes out in your sending hours, once for that event. Nobody rebuilds a list. Staff ring up the code.

  1. Welcome: $5 off the whole check. Good for 30 days.
  2. After they use it: 50% off any one item. Good for 7 days.
  3. After they use that: two specialty burritos at 50% off each. (When both cost the same, that totals the same as buy one, get one free.) Good for 7 days.
  4. After they use that: 25% off the whole order. Good for 7 days.

A first-timer has not been back in 7 days$3 off a second burrito

Each step can send right away, around 11:00am, or around 4:30pm on your shop's clock.

When you turn a ladder on, you decide whether people who already qualify get it now, spread over 3, 7 or 14 days, or only from today. You see how many people that is before anything sends. Nothing goes out until you turn it on.

Lists that sort your customers while you work

Nobody is added by hand. Customers move in and out as they visit and spend, and every list is checked every hour. Six are built in. Use them as they are, or build your own from visits, spend and offers used.

ListWho is in itWhat suits them
NewOne visit, and it was in the last 45 days.A reason to come a second time.
DevelopingTwo to four visits, the most recent in the last 45 days.A small nudge, not a big discount.
RegularFive visits or more, the most recent in the last 45 days.Recognition. A discount here costs you money you would have had anyway.
At riskThey used to come in, and their last visit was more than 45 days ago and less than 90.Your best return per text.
LapsedNothing for 90 days or more.Three texts across a month, not one send to everybody.
Top spendersThe top quarter of your customers by what they spent in the last 12 months. It moves as everyone's spending does. Thanks, and a first look at something new. They already pay full price, so a big discount gives money away.

Square Marketing alternatives, answered

Is GetSetReply part of Square?

GetSetReply is an independent company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Square. It connects to your Square account with your permission, the way other apps you add to Square do.

Do I have to stop using Square Marketing?

No. Nothing in your Square account is switched off. You can keep Square Marketing for email.

Can Square send a second offer only to people who used the first?

Square's help pages describe each automated campaign as one message, and they do not list redemption as a group filter. Owners who want it rebuild the group from the campaign report by hand. A GetSetReply ladder does it for you.

What changes for my staff?

They enter the code in Square as a discount code, on the register they already use. You can ring up a test code yourself first.

What does GetSetReply connect to in Square?

Square needs your permission for us to create the codes we text, and nothing else about your Square connection changes.

Who can I text?

Only people who asked. Customers join by texting JOIN to your number or signing up on your sign-up page, and anyone can text STOP at any time.

How long until the first text?

The carriers check that your business is real first. We file it. Their check takes 10 to 15 days, and you can build offers and ladders while it runs.

What does it cost?

A plan (Available on Professional and Enterprise. Starter accounts can upgrade to add it.), your texting number at $10/mo with 500 texts a month, and the Coupons add-on, which is in beta, priced per location, and quoted before you decide. See Square text marketing pricing.

Keep Square. Let the next offer send itself.

Tell us what you send today. If it fits, we set it up with you and file your carrier registration.
