How much does Square text marketing cost?

Texting is not on Square Free. Square Plus is $49 a month per location with 500 texts, then 3¢ each. Square Premium is $149 with 2,500, then 1.5¢. Below: a worked month, and the weekly work no price list covers.

Next: a short form, then about 30 minutes with our team on what you send your Square customers today. GetSetReply is a separate company, not part of Square, and your register stays Square.

The short answer

  • Square Free: no text marketing. Coupon codes are still free.
  • Square Plus: $49 a month per location. 500 texts a month per account, then 3¢ a text.
  • Square Premium: $149 a month per location. 2,500 texts a month per account, then 1.5¢ a text.
  • Both include unlimited email campaign sends.

What a month of texts costs on Square

One location, from Square's published prices. The totals include the subscription, because you cannot text on Square without one. The subscription also pays for the rest of that plan.

TopicSquare PlusSquare Premium
1,000 texts in a month$64 ($15 of it texts)$149 ($0 of it texts)
3,000 texts in a month$124 ($75 of it texts)$156.50 ($7.50 of it texts)

Three things that trip people up

  • Per location vs per account. The subscription is charged for each location, but the included texts are per account. A second location adds a second fee and no extra texts.
  • One campaign is not one text. A campaign to 500 people is 500 texts.
  • Old answers still rank. A 2022 community thread describes $10 a month for up to 250 texts. That was how Square sold texting on its own then. Today texting comes with Plus and Premium.

The texts are a few cents. Rebuilding the list is the work.

Whichever tool you use, a marketing text is a small line on the bill. Making texts bring people back is a weekly job:

  1. Open the campaign report and see who redeemed.
  2. Build the next group from that list.
  3. Take out anyone who already got the next offer.
  4. Send it.
  5. Do it again next week.

A burrito shop owner did exactly that, every week, to keep a four-step series of offers going in Square.

GetSetReply runs that sequence for you. When a customer uses one offer at your register, Square tells us, and their next offer goes out in your sending hours. Each step sends once for that event.

  • Your weekly list work, gone. Nobody pulls a campaign report or rebuilds a group.
  • A Square code for every customer. It is made in your Square account before the text goes out.
  • A record of what came back. Results shows which offer was used and what each order came to.

Tell us how many customers you text and what you send now. We will show you what can run without the weekly list, and what it costs.

What you get with GetSetReply

  • A Square discount code per customer, rung up on the register your staff already use. There is nothing to install.
  • Ladders: the next offer, sent at the right moment. It can go out when they use the last offer, on their fifth visit, or when you have not seen them for 45 days. Before a ladder turns on, you see how many people qualify. Nothing goes out until you turn it on.
  • Lists that update themselves from your Square orders. Your first-timers, regulars, regulars who have gone quiet, and top spenders, sorted for you. Six are built in: New, Developing, Regular, At risk, Lapsed and Top spenders. You can also build a list of who used an offer, or who got one and did not use it.
  • Results by offer. Texts sent, who came in and used their code, what you gave away, and what those orders came to. On a one-time send you can also hold a few people back, and after about 90 days compare how often they came back with everyone who got it.
  • Texts only to people who asked. JOIN by text or your sign-up page, and STOP works straight away. We file the carrier registration.

What texting costs with GetSetReply

GetSetReply has three parts:

  1. A plan. Available on Professional and Enterprise. Starter accounts can upgrade to add it. Professional is $59/mo per location.
  2. Your texting number. $10/mo for your account, with 500 texts a month that reset each billing month. Extra texts come in top-ups of 500 for $15, 2,000 for $50 or 10,000 for $200, and unused ones roll over. Includes 500 texts a month. Each time they run out we automatically add 500 for $15, or the larger top-up you choose (2,000 for $50 or 10,000 for $200). You can change the amount or turn this off in Billing.
  3. The Coupons add-on. Coupons itself is in beta, and we quote its price when we set it up with you. It is priced per location, and you get its price before you decide.

Carriers count texts in segments: up to 160 characters, or 70 with an emoji. The composer counts for you as you type.

The carrier check takes 10 to 15 days. You can build offers while it runs. The first text waits until it clears.
