On Etsy, replying can cost you the edit

Etsy has a rule no other platform in this section has. Once you respond to a review the buyer can no longer change it, even if you delete your response. On a low rating you were hoping they would revisit, that one rule should reorder how you work the queue.

The rules that decide when to reply, not how

Everything below is from Etsy's seller documentation. The second one is the reason this page is about sequencing rather than wording.

  • You have a hundred days from the buyer's last edit of the review to respond publicly.

It is the longest window any platform here puts a number on, and it is the reason the right answer to most bad reviews is not today.

  • Once you respond, the buyer can no longer edit the review, even if you delete your response.

A public reply closes the door on the buyer improving the review themselves. Fix the order first and reply second.

  • Your response is public on the listing pages and on your Shop Reviews page.

It travels with the item, so it is read by somebody shopping that listing rather than browsing your shop as a whole.

  • A review response is not counted as a message and does not affect the Star Seller response rate.

Answering reviews neither helps nor hurts that badge, so do it for the next shopper and not for the metric.

  • You can report a review, reporting is confidential, and a negative review that complies with Etsy's policies will not be removed.

The report is not the plan. It is why this section has no Etsy removal guide at all.

The order of operations on a bad Etsy review

This is the one platform where the first step is deliberately not replying.

  1. Message the buyer before you reply

A conversation that ends in a replacement or a refund can end with the buyer editing the review themselves. A public reply removes that possibility for good.

  2. Give it a few days

You have a hundred of them. Spending three on a resolution is a better use of the window than a same day response nobody asked for.

  3. If it resolves, decide whether to reply at all

Sometimes the best public response to a corrected review is none, and that is a real option here rather than a cop out.

  4. If it does not, write for the next shopper

Address the specific concern and any change you made. Etsy's own guidance is to keep it short and professional and to focus on your product and service rather than on the reviewer.

  5. Post it and let it stand

Deleting the response later does not hand the buyer the edit back, so treat posting as the point of no return that it is.

A two star review on a made to order piece

A small ceramics shop. The complaint is about a colour, which is the hardest kind to answer without appearing to argue.

The review

Rowan K.

Two stars out of five. reviewed last month.

The glaze is nothing like the photo. I ordered the deep teal mug and what arrived is closer to grey green. It is well made, I am not saying it is not, but I bought a colour and I did not get it.
The drafted reply
Rowan, that is a reasonable thing to be annoyed about, and the photo is the part at fault. Deep Teal is a reduction glaze, so it moves between grey green and blue depending on where a piece sits in the kiln, and the listing photo showed the bluest one out of a firing of forty. I have replaced it with a photo of three mugs from the same firing so the range is visible, and added a line about it to the description. If you would like one from the bluer end of the next firing, message me and I will send it at no charge. The one you have is yours to keep.

The sentence doing the work

the listing photo showed the bluest one out of a firing of forty

The temptation on a colour complaint is to explain how kilns work until the buyer feels foolish. This does the opposite. It explains the variation and then concedes that the photograph was chosen badly, which is a fact about the seller rather than about ceramics. The next shopper reading that listing learns exactly what to expect, which is the only thing a public response on a listing page is really for.

What GetSetReply does with an Etsy review

GetSetReply drafts the public response and leaves both the timing and the posting to you. On Etsy the timing is the part that matters most.

  • Drafts arrive whether or not you should post them. On a rating you would like the buyer to revisit, read the rule above before you paste anything.
  • You post the response in your shop yourself. We hold no session on Etsy.
  • Nothing is published on your behalf.

One is how the Etsy connection works. The other is the wording for the complaint that most often needs a replacement rather than a reply.

Etsy review questions from sellers

Answered from Etsy's seller help pages, which are cited with dates at the bottom.

How long do I have to respond to an Etsy review?

A hundred days from the date the buyer last edited the review. It is the longest window any platform we connect puts a number on.

Does replying stop the buyer from editing their review?

Yes. Once you respond the buyer cannot edit it, whatever the rating was, and deleting your response does not restore it.

Where does my response appear?

Publicly, in the Reviews section of your listing pages and on your Shop Reviews page, so it is read by people looking at that item.

Does answering reviews affect Star Seller?

No. Etsy says review responses are not counted as messages and have no impact on the Star Seller response rate criteria.

Can I get a bad Etsy review taken down?

You can report a review and reporting is confidential, but Etsy says reviews that are negative and comply with its policies will not be removed. That is why this section carries no Etsy removal guide.

Where the Etsy rules on this page came from

Three Etsy help pages, all read on the date shown. The reply window and the edit rule both come from the first.
