Etsy shop reviews, with the constraints stated up front

Etsy is the odd one on this list. It gives a rating, words and a photo, and it does not give you the buyer's name, which changes how a reply has to be written before you have written a word of it.

What happens to an Etsy review here

Four steps, written around the two Etsy rules that make a public response final the moment you send it.

  1. The Etsy review lands in your inboxThe rating and whatever the buyer wrote, any photo they attached, and the date the review was last edited. An Etsy buyer can change a review after leaving it, so knowing which version is in front of you is the difference between answering them and answering a sentence they have already taken back.
  2. We analyze it, photograph includedSentiment by topic, whether an apology is owed, the specifics worth naming back, and a flag where a review threatens legal action, describes a hazard or turns abusive. On Etsy the picture of what arrived is often the entire complaint, and the draft is written knowing there is one.
  3. We draft the response without a first nameEtsy exposes an internal buyer id and no display name, so a draft that opened with a first name would be guessing at one. It opens on what happened instead, which is the honest option and usually the better one.
  4. You post it once, in Shop ManagerOpen your shop, go to Reviews and post a public response. The draft waits in your GetSetReply inbox until then, which matters more here than anywhere else on this list: Etsy gives you one response and no way to edit it.

Etsy allows one public response, and it is final

You post it from Shop Manager: open your shop, go to Reviews and choose to post a public response. It shows on your listing and on your shop reviews page.

Etsy allows exactly one response per review. You can delete it afterwards but you cannot edit it or leave another, and the moment you respond the buyer loses the ability to edit their review or rating, even if you delete what you wrote.

A one shot public reply with a hundred day deadline is a good argument for reading a draft carefully before you send it, which is the part GetSetReply is for. We write it. You post it, once, from Shop Manager, when you are happy with it.

A maker selling on Etsy is usually rated somewhere else too, often under a different name.

Etsy seller questions

The four that follow from Etsy being a marketplace rather than a listing.

Why does my Etsy review have no customer name?

Etsy does not publish a buyer display name through the path we read, only an internal id. Rather than invent a name, reviews arrive under a neutral label and the draft is written without one.

How long do I have to respond to an Etsy review?

Etsy gives a seller 100 days from the date the buyer last edited the review. That is generous compared with delivery platforms, and it is still a deadline.

Can I edit my Etsy response later?

No. Etsy allows one response per review. You can delete it from Shop Manager, but you cannot edit it or post another, so the version you send is the one that counts. That is why the draft waits in your GetSetReply inbox until you are happy with it.

Does responding stop the buyer changing their review?

Yes. Etsy states that once you respond, the buyer can no longer edit their review or rating, even if you later delete your response. Worth knowing before you answer a review somebody is still talking to you about.

You only get one, it cannot be edited, and it is easier to write when you are not starting from nothing.
