TripAdvisor reviews

Fake or contested. TripAdvisor treats them as different problems

This is the most useful distinction in review moderation and almost nobody outside the industry knows it exists. A fake review is one from somebody biased or with no personal experience. A contested review is a real guest whose account you dispute. Only the first is a removal case.

The distinction, and the machinery around it

Four points from TripAdvisor's owner FAQ and its guidance on unfair reviews. The second one is the whole page.

  • Every review carries a Report problem with review flag at the bottom, and TripAdvisor says it researches the complaint within forty eight hours.

It is the fastest published turnaround of any platform in this section, so there is no reason to sit on a genuine fraud report.

  • A fake review comes from somebody biased or with no personal experience. A contested review comes from a real guest whose account you dispute.

Reports fail because owners file the second as the first. Naming which one you are reporting is the difference between a hearing and a form letter.

  • If moderation concludes the review meets the guidelines, it stays posted, and the recommended remedy is a response giving your side.

That is TripAdvisor telling you, in advance, what happens to most contested reports and what to do next.

  • A review alleging that other reviews are fraudulent will not be posted, because it does not relate to the writer's own experience.

Worth knowing in both directions. It also means the accusation cannot be made about you in public by somebody else.

Reporting a review the way TripAdvisor sorts them

Decide which of the two words applies before you open the flag. Everything after that follows from the answer.

  1. Decide: fake, or contested

Was the writer biased or absent, or were they there and you disagree with them? Be honest about this. It determines whether the next four steps are worth taking.

  2. If it is fake, assemble what shows it

No booking, no record of the stay, a pattern of the same account reviewing competitors, a departing employee. Bias and absence are the two things you are demonstrating.

  3. Use the flag at the bottom of the review

Report problem with review sits on the review itself. TripAdvisor says the complaint is researched within forty eight hours.

  4. If it is contested, skip the flag

A guest who was really there and remembers it differently is not a moderation case, and filing it as one costs you two days and the moderator's goodwill.

  5. Write the management response either way

It is what TripAdvisor recommends for a contested review, it is published in about two days, and it sits directly under the review for everyone who reads it afterwards.

Removable, and merely disputed

What TripAdvisor treats as removable

  • Reviews from someone with no personal experience of the property.
  • Reviews from someone biased, which covers the categories its fraud guidelines set out.
  • Content that breaches the review posting guidelines rather than merely displeasing the owner.

What stays up

  • A contested review: an honest first-hand account you dispute stays posted if moderation finds it meets the guidelines.
  • A negative review that follows the posting guidelines, however much damage it does.
  • Any review whose only problem is that your records say something different.

What GetSetReply does when a review stays up

We cannot flag a review for you and would not want the position of judging which of your reviews is fake. What we can do is have the response written before you have finished being annoyed.

  • No flagging, no removal service, no arrangement with TripAdvisor of any kind that could produce one.
  • The management response arrives drafted inside TripAdvisor's own posting rules, which is the remedy it recommends for a contested review.
  • Nothing is published on your behalf.

One is the TripAdvisor connection itself. The other is the wording for the review that most often arrives with a single bubble and a paragraph.

TripAdvisor removal questions

Answered from TripAdvisor's owner FAQ and its published guidance, both cited below.

How do I report a TripAdvisor review?

Use the Report problem with review flag at the bottom of the review. TripAdvisor says it will research the complaint within forty eight hours.

What is the difference between a fake review and a contested one?

A fake review is submitted by somebody biased or without personal experience. A contested review is from a guest with a genuine experience whose account the business disputes. Only the first is a removal case.

What happens if moderation decides the review is fine?

It stays posted, and TripAdvisor points the business at a management response as the way to give its side of the story.

Can I post a review accusing another review of being fake?

No. TripAdvisor says reviews alleging that other posted reviews are fraudulent are not posted, because that does not relate to the writer's own travel experience.

Can GetSetReply remove a TripAdvisor review?

No. We draft the management response, which is the remedy TripAdvisor itself recommends when a review stays up.
