TripAdvisor reviews, without the Management Center vigil

Travel reviews arrive in clumps, usually a week after the stay and usually while you are busy with the next one. Connecting the listing turns the clump into a short queue of answers that are already written by the time you open it.

What happens to a TripAdvisor review here

Four steps, with TripAdvisor's guest anonymity rule applied while the response is written rather than left for you to catch afterwards.

  1. The stay lands in your inboxThe whole review, not the opening line of it. Travel reviews run long, and the specific complaint in paragraph three is usually the one a response has to answer. A Management Response you already published arrives with it and marks the review handled.
  2. We analyze the whole review, not the first lineSentiment by topic, whether an apology is owed, the concrete details worth naming back, and a flag where a review threatens legal action, describes a hazard or turns abusive. On a six paragraph review that is the difference between answering the guest and answering their opening sentence.
  3. We draft the response in your voiceWritten to TripAdvisor's own posting guidelines, which prohibit personal information that identifies an individual. So the draft addresses the guest the way the listing already does and never puts a name, an address or a room number into a public answer.
  4. You submit it in TripAdvisor's Management CenterThe draft waits in your GetSetReply inbox and TripAdvisor's free Management Center is where a Management Response is submitted. TripAdvisor reviews it before it appears on the listing, and we publish nothing there.

How a Management Response gets published

TripAdvisor calls the reply a Management Response, and it is posted from the free Management Center rather than from the public listing. You register the property, pick the review and write the answer there.

There is no character limit on it, which is a trap rather than a licence: the guidance from TripAdvisor is to stay short, and a long answer under a short complaint reads as defensive to the next person choosing where to stay.

GetSetReply writes that response and leaves it in your GetSetReply inbox to read, edit and submit. TripAdvisor's Management Center is the only place it can be published from, and we never sign in to it.

TripAdvisor questions we hear

Mostly from operators who have been burned by one review sitting unanswered at the top of a listing.

How quickly does a Management Response appear?

TripAdvisor reviews responses before publishing them, so there is a gap between submitting and seeing it live. Writing the draft ahead of time is what shortens the part you control.

Should every review get a response?

TripAdvisor's own advice is to make sure a traveller does not have to scroll far to find one, which in practice means keeping recent reviews covered rather than answering every review ever written.

Can I name the guest in my reply?

TripAdvisor's posting guidelines prohibit personal information that identifies an individual, including names, addresses and phone numbers. Drafts are written to stay on the right side of that.

Do you post the response for me?

No. The draft waits in your GetSetReply inbox and you submit it from TripAdvisor's Management Center. Nothing reaches your listing unless you send it.
