Yelp reviews

Yelp's answer to this question is do not ask

That is not our opinion of Yelp and it is not a hedge. It is the title of Yelp's own policy page for business owners, and the software behind the site is built to act on it. Any guide that hands you a Yelp review request script is quoting the wrong company.

What Yelp publishes, in Yelp's words

Four statements from the policy page itself, because this is the one platform where paraphrasing loses the point.

  • Do not ask anyone to review your business, including customers, mailing list subscribers, friends and family.

There is no compliant version of a Yelp review request campaign. The scope of that sentence is deliberate and it is total.

  • Yelp's automated software may not recommend a review that looks prompted or encouraged by the business.

A prompted review can end up filtered out of your rating entirely, so the campaign costs money and moves nothing.

  • Do not ask after collecting feedback somewhere else, and never offer a freebie, a discount or payment in exchange.

The survey-then-ask sequence is named specifically, which rules out the most common workaround before anyone suggests it.

  • Yelp runs a Consumer Alerts programme that puts a public alert on a business page when it finds this kind of activity.

The downside is not a quiet filtering. It is a banner on your listing, visible to everyone, for a while.

What is left, and it is not nothing

Yelp's own answer is to earn them. Here is what that actually looks like as work, rather than as a platitude.

  1. Claim the page and finish it

Hours, photographs, the From the Business section, the correct categories. People review businesses they could find, understand and reach.

  2. Make the visit memorable rather than adequate

Yelp's stated position is that the way to unbiased reviews is a high quality, memorable experience with no expectation of a review in return. That is a hard answer, and it is the published one.

  3. Answer the reviews you already have

Public comments are visible to everyone on the page, and a page where the owner clearly reads what is written is a page more people write on.

  4. Put your review programme on the platforms that allow one

The energy you would have spent on Yelp requests belongs on Google, where asking is documented and permitted. Same customers, different rulebook.

  5. Never buy your way around it

Beyond Yelp's own policy, the FTC's rule prohibits compensation that carries an express or implied requirement for the review to express a particular sentiment, and the FTC says paying a customer to change or remove a truthful negative one may be an unfair or deceptive practice under the FTC Act. Federal either way.

What GetSetReply does and does not do here

We connect Yelp so you can read and answer the reviews you have. There is no Yelp asking tool in the product: no Yelp campaign, no Yelp reminder, and no wording anywhere that asks a customer for a Yelp review.

  • Be clear-eyed about the request link, though. It opens your own review page, and that page lists every review platform your account has connected, so a connected Yelp listing is one of the buttons on it.
  • Yelp reviews land in the same queue as the rest, with a public comment drafted for you to check and post yourself.
  • Nothing is published on your behalf, on Yelp or anywhere else.

Review requests by email and SMS are included on Professional and Enterprise. Your review funnel links, QR codes and contacts are on every plan.

One page covers the Yelp connection itself. The other is what to write when a good review turns up unprompted, which on Yelp is the only kind there is.

Yelp is one of the places we watch

Every platform below lands in the same queue, so a Yelp review and a review from anywhere else are read, drafted and answered in one place.

  • Yelp
  • TripAdvisor
  • DoorDash
  • Trustpilot
  • Etsy

  • Square

The questions this page usually raises

All four are answered from Yelp's published policy, cited with a date below.

Can I ask a customer to review me on Yelp?

Yelp's published policy says not to ask anyone, naming customers, mailing list subscribers, friends and family. It is the clearest position of any platform we connect.

What happens if I ask anyway?

Yelp says its automated software may not recommend reviews that seem prompted or encouraged by the business, so the reviews may not count toward your rating. It also runs a Consumer Alerts programme that can put a public alert on your page.

Can I put a Yelp link in a survey follow up?

Yelp names that sequence specifically and says not to ask for reviews after requesting feedback in other places such as surveys or contact forms.

So how do I get more Yelp reviews?

Yelp's own answer is to provide a high quality, memorable experience without any expectation or encouragement of a review in return, and to keep the page complete and answered. There is no shortcut published anywhere.

Does GetSetReply send Yelp review requests?

There is no Yelp asking tool: no Yelp campaign, no Yelp reminder, and nothing in the product that writes a request for a Yelp review. What a request link does open is your own review page, which lists whichever review platforms you have connected, so a connected Yelp listing appears there as one of the choices. Whether a customer is pointed at Yelp is your decision rather than something the product does on its own.
