Yelp reviews, in the same queue as everything else

Yelp is the platform owners most often stop reading, usually after one bad week. Pulling it into a shared queue is how it goes back to being three replies rather than a thing you avoid.

What happens to a Yelp review here

Four steps, and the third one is written for the answer route you are actually going to use.

  1. The Yelp review reaches your inboxWith the rating, the review as written, and the public Yelp name, which is usually a first name and an initial. That is what a reply should address and it is what the draft uses. Anything you have already answered comes back marked as handled.
  2. We analyze it, and we keep Yelp's own dateSentiment by topic, whether an apology is owed, the details worth naming back, and a flag where a reviewer threatens legal action, describes a hazard or turns abusive. Yelp rotates older reviews back into what it returns, so the date we keep is Yelp's, and a review written two years ago never sets off an alert as though it were last night.
  3. We draft it for the route you will useA public comment under the review and a direct message to one person are not the same piece of writing. One is read by strangers deciding where to eat, the other by the person who complained, and the draft is written knowing which you picked.
  4. You post it on YelpFrom your Yelp for Business account, as a public comment or a direct message. The words wait in your GetSetReply inbox until you send them, and signing in to Yelp stays yours.

How replying works on Yelp

Yelp gives you two routes, and they are not interchangeable. A public comment sits directly under the review where anybody reading your page can see it. A direct message goes to the reviewer alone.

Both need a Yelp for Business account, and Yelp asks for an approved profile photo before you can answer at all, which is the step that catches most owners on their first attempt.

Whichever route you pick, the words are yours to send. GetSetReply prepares the draft and hands it over; Yelp for Business is where it gets published, and we never sign in there.

Yelp beside the rest of your listings

A business rarely gets bad news on one platform only. These are the others we pull into the same list.

What owners ask about Yelp

Yelp behaves differently enough from Google that the same four questions come round every time.

Why did a two year old Yelp review show up as new?

Yelp rotates older reviews back into what it returns. We keep the date Yelp recorded, and an alert is not sent for anything older than a month, so it appears in your inbox without pretending to be fresh.

Can I answer a Yelp reviewer privately?

Yes, Yelp offers a direct message as well as a public comment. A common pattern is to answer publicly and add that you will follow up, then send the detail privately.

Why can I not reply on Yelp yet?

Yelp asks for a Yelp for Business account with an approved profile photo before it lets you answer. Until that photo clears there is nowhere to post the reply.

Does connecting Yelp change anything on my Yelp page?

No. We read your reviews. Nothing about your page, your rating or your listing is written to, and the draft sits in your GetSetReply inbox until you post it from Yelp for Business yourself.
